“But Steve!” Harry’s voice broke. “We forgot about Steve!”

Steve had been enjoying his time in the sun o on his own, perhaps by the pond where the baby dragons liked to

practice breathing fire, or perhaps in the tall grass toward the far end of the atrium where the baby dragons practiced stealth hunting. Either way, he’d been left behind, left to be burned, or eaten, or…

“I’m sure he’ll be okay,” Iggy said. He touched Harry’s shoulder, which had escaped injury. “He has to be.”

Harry turned his head to the side. Tears slid down his cheeks.

Steve wasn’t going to be okay. Harry had left him to die.

Julius, who’d settled near Harry’s head sometime after Harry had collapsed on the bed, licked the tears from his face. I’m sorry, each little lick told Harry.

It wasn’t much help—the more Harry thought about what he’d done, the more heavily the tears came on.

Iggy was gone from his side, left to tend to something—

most likely his eggs—but the bed dipped, anyway. It was Perry. Soon enough, his gentle fingers wove through Harry’s hair, and he whispered soft, a rming noises in Harry’s ear like he did with the babies. Julius tucked his head under Harry’s chin, and, one by one, the rest of the young dragons found their own place next to Harry, touching him in small, but gentle ways.

We’re here, the babies said through their body language.

You’re not alone.

But despite it all, Harry felt totally, soul-crushingly lonely.

He’d lost Steve, and soon enough, when his body could take no more and he closed his eyes for the last time, he’d lose everyone who mattered to him. Iggy, Perry, the babies, Alistair, Sebastian, his family, and…

Tears leaked from Harry’s eyes, burning on their way down his scorched cheeks.

When he died, he’d lose Everard, too.
